DEVICE & INSTALLATION

Can I install Airlock™ by myself?

Yes, Airlock™ is designed for self-installation, and the average setup time is just 15 minutes. For step-by-step installation instructions, click here.

What are the input voltage specifications for Airlock™?

Airlock™ is compatible with a wide range of AC input voltages, working efficiently with 110-240VAC.

Does Airlock™ work on boats with only 12V power systems?

Airlock™ is primarily designed for use with AC input voltages ranging from 110 to 240VAC. For boats equipped only with a 12V system, a marine-grade power inverter would be required to convert 12V DC to a compatible AC voltage.

Do I need to install an Airlock™ for each air conditioner on board?

It's best to install one Airlock™ per air conditioning unit that supplies air to a cabin. Here’s a simple guide:

  • One air conditioner serving a specific cabin or area requires one (1) Airlock™
  • Two separate air conditioners serving two individual cabins or areas require two (2) Airlocks™
  • Multiple air conditioners supplying the same cabin or area require only one Airlock™, regardless of the number of units.

Does Airlock™ require maintenance?

Airlock™ is designed to operate without spare parts, refills, or filters, and typically requires no maintenance. However, if your air conditioning system is located in a particularly dusty environment, we recommend a periodic light cleaning of the ion emitters (brushes) using any soft cloth. Always remember to turn off the power before cleaning.

Can I configure Airlock™ to function only when the AC is running, instead of continuously?

Absolutely, you can set up Airlock™ to operate in synchronization with your air conditioner. To achieve this, connect the device to the AC unit's motor blower, rather than linking it to the unit's power board or circuit board. This ensures that Airlock™ activates only when the air conditioner is in operation, rather than running continuously.

How can Airlock™ be installed on split system air conditioners?

Installing Airlock™ on split system air conditioners can vary depending on the specific setup and location of the units. In many situations, a plug-in installation is feasible, where the unit draws power from the nearest available power source. However, due to the complexities associated with various installation environments, we strongly recommend consulting with a marine electrician. This ensures that the installation is done safely and effectively, tailored to your specific requirements.

Will Airlock™ still work if I don’t have an A/C unit onboard and I just have fans instead?

For optimal performance, Airlock™ is designed to be integrated with an air conditioning unit. This is because the system uses the airflow generated by the A/C to distribute ions effectively throughout the vessel, ensuring comprehensive air purification. Without an A/C unit, and using only fans, Airlock™ performance may be affected.

How long does Airlock™ take to eliminate odors after it's installed?

The effectiveness of Airlock™ in eliminating odors varies based on the nature and intensity of the odor present within the boat's interior. Typically, you should begin to notice a significant improvement in air quality between 1 to 5 days after installation. For especially strong odors, a few additional days and continuous operation may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Will Airlock™ work if my boat doesn't have AC?

To guarantee constant ionization throughout the boat, Airlock™ requires to be integrated with an existing or new air conditioning unit.

What is the life expectancy of Airlock™?

The average life expectancy is 5 years and it depends on many factors such as room temperature, humidity level, and other specific usage conditions. We’ve seen Airlock™ devices in use 6 years after they were installed and they are still working without issue.

What should I do if odors persist after installing Airlock™?

These are very important factors to consider if odors persist after installing Airlock™:

Underlying Cause: Airlock™ is designed to effectively break up the molecular structure of odors and smells, providing the feeling of fresh air indoors. However, it's crucial to understand that persistent odors may indicate an unresolved underlying issue. If the root cause of the odor isn't addressed, Airlock™ might not be able to completely neutralize the smell as it's continuously combating new odors from the same source. We recommend inspecting common areas where unpleasant odors originate, such as the bilge, holding tank, any leaks, clogs, or deteriorated hose lines. Addressing these issues alongside using Airlock™ will ensure the freshest onboard experience.

AC Service Area: Airlock™ must be connected proximal to the specific AC unit that supplies conditioned air to the area or space with the odor problem. This ensures that the air-purifying ions are carried through the ductwork and into the affected area.

TECHNOLOGY

How does Airlock™ eliminate odors and musty smells?

Airlock™ features Bipolar Ionization Technology—similar to systems used in hospitals and commercial HVAC—to generate a balanced quantity of negative and positive ions. These ions bond with oxygen molecules in the air and are then recirculated through your boat's AC system and ductwork. This process effectively neutralizes lingering odors at their source and captures airborne contaminants such as mold, mildew, and bacteria.

Does Airlock™ produce ozone?

All current Airlock products comply with UL 867 the Standard for Electrostatic Air Cleaners, to ensure no more than 0.05 parts per million (ppm) of ozone are produced which is considered no harmful levels of ozone.

What pathogens does Airlock™ treat?

Airlock™ eliminates coronaviruses (bovine & porcine), H1N1 influenza (swine flu virus), pollen, dust mite allergens, DNA viruses, black mold, bacterial spores, fungi, staphylococcus, pet dander, tobacco smoke, and many more pathogens.

Does Airlock™ ionization damages vinyl, rubber, plastic, or wire coatings?

Airlock™ is NOT an ozone generator, and thus, no material deterioration has been observed. Unlike ozone generators that emit 'shock' levels of ozone to clean the air, Airlock™ uses Bipolar Ionization Technology to purify the air safely. Airlock™ is engineered in compliance with UL 867, which is the Standard for Electrostatic Air Cleaners. It ensures ozone production is limited to no more than 0.05 parts per million (ppm), a level considered harmless.

How does Airlock™ prevent the formation of mold/mildew?

Airlock's Bipolar Ionization Technology effectively prevents the formation of airborne pathogens such as mold spores, bacteria, and viruses. Airlock™ generates millions of negatively and positively charged ions that adhere to the oxygen molecules surrounding mold spores while they are suspended in the air. This interaction causes the ions to extract hydrogen from the pathogens. Once the essential hydrogen is removed, the mold spore is either deactivated or undergoes decomposition before it can settle on surfaces safeguarding the boat's interior.

Troubleshooting

How do I know Airlock™ is working properly?

Firstly, observe the purple LED on the front face of the device; when Airlock™ is functioning as intended, this light will be illuminated. For an optional, additional verification step, a non-contact voltage reader can be utilized. Simply position it near the ion emitters/brushes of the device - a voltage indication will confirm that Airlock™ is actively working to purify and freshen your air.

What should I do if the LED indicator fails to illuminate?

In the event that the LED indicator does not light up, please ensure Airlock is installed correctly: the black and red wires should be securely connected to the power source. Ensure all connections are firm and accurate, guaranteeing optimal functionality for your air purifier.
